IT Support in Edinburgh: What Growing Firms Should Expect
Edinburgh businesses face tougher client due diligence than most. Here is the standard of IT support you should be holding your provider to.

Edinburgh businesses get audited more than most. Financial services, legal practices, accountancy firms and the tech sector all sit in supply chains where somebody eventually asks hard questions about how you handle data.
That raises the bar for what counts as adequate IT support. Here is the standard worth holding your provider to.
Security you can evidence, not just claim
There is a large gap between "we take security seriously" and being able to hand a client a certificate and a policy pack the same day they ask.
At minimum you should have Cyber Essentials certification, documented backup and restore testing, multi-factor authentication across the board, and a clear record of who has access to what. If your provider cannot produce that evidence on request, you will be the one scrambling when a due diligence questionnaire lands.
Response times that are measured, not promised
Every provider says they respond quickly. Ask for the actual figures: average first response, average time to resolve, and what percentage of tickets breach their own targets.
Our own average first response sits under 15 minutes during business hours. The number matters less than whether your provider measures it at all.
Support for how Edinburgh actually works
A lot of Edinburgh teams are genuinely hybrid, with staff split across the office, home, and clients' premises. Some commute in from Fife or the Lothians and work two days a week from a kitchen table.
That setup only works if identity, device management and secure remote access are properly built rather than bolted on. Everyone should get the same experience and the same protection wherever they open their laptop.
Co-managed IT if you already have someone
If you have an internal IT manager, the right relationship is partnership rather than replacement. Your provider takes monitoring, patching, backups, licensing and out-of-hours cover. Your person keeps the institutional knowledge and drives the projects that actually move the business forward.
It is usually cheaper than hiring a second internal person and considerably more resilient when your one IT person goes on holiday.
Pricing that does not punish you for asking
Hourly billing creates a quiet tax on curiosity. Staff sit on problems rather than raise them, small issues become large ones, and you find out at renewal.
Flat-rate per user per month is more predictable for you and more honest for the provider, because it only works if they keep your systems stable.
A sensible plan, reviewed regularly
Good IT support is not just fixing things. It is knowing what needs replacing in eighteen months, what your licensing will cost after the next Microsoft price change, and where your biggest risk currently sits.
Quarterly reviews with a named person who knows your business are worth more than any dashboard.
The Orange Penguin take
We are Dundee based and have been since 2007, and we cover Edinburgh and the Lothians with the same engineers and the same flat-rate plan.
What we bring to Edinburgh is a slightly unfashionable approach: answer the phone, quote a price you can plan around, and treat a 12 person firm as seriously as a 120 person one.
